Email marketing in 2021 is still one of the most under-utilised promotional methods for musicians out there, if you’re looking to promote a single or an entire album, then there is nothing like having direct communication with your audience rather then having to bt restrained by the ever diluting algorithms of social media, with email marketing you’re 100% in control, not only can you use email in its traditional sense, but your email list can also act as a hyper-targeted list to run advertisements against.
So if you’re planning on releasing a single, beat tap or any kind of project and you know that email marketing is something that you have to include in your promotional strategy, here is what I consider to be the best email marketing service for musicians that will help you along the way.
Let’s take a look at its features and how they can help you promote your project.
Introducing Mailerlite
Mailerlite is an excellent email marketing service for musicians, packed with features that will make it super easy for you to promote your next single or album, build your email list and anticipation all at the same time.
While I could name them all, I’m not going to, that would make this article ridiculously long i just want to explain why i love this platform so much.
They have one of the best delivery rates around if you don’t know what that is it means its the percentage of people on your email list that actually receive your email in their inbox.
Features
Embedded Forms & Landing Pages
One of the most important things to make sure you have when building an email list as a musician is that your fans/visitors have the ability to actually sign up to your list.
Embedded forms and Landing Pages are an essential tool that you can use to attract people into joining your email list.
For instance, if you’re promoting a single release you can use embedded forms or a landing page to promote an incentive such as early access or a behind the scenes video of you recording the single in exchange for the visitor’s email address.
Easy To Understand Automations
As I mentioned in the section above, to offer a listener an incentive to check out your single, you’ll have to set up an automation to trigger when a visitor fills in your embedded form or landing page.
In Mailerlite this is easily achieved, you can simply set up the automation to trigger when a visitor joins a subscriber group via filling out a form, you can then later add to the automation with conditions based on user activity, delayed periods of time and much more.
With automation, you can get as adventurous as your mind can get creative.
Check out my guide here for setting up automation workflows within Mailerlite.
HTML & Plain Text Emails
Mailerlite has an excellent editor that you can use to put together both HTML and plain text emails.
HTML
Here is an example of an HTML email that promotes one of our sample packs Warm 808’s:
To build a great looking HTML email you don’t have to know any coding languages, its a sample as dragging and dropping individual blocks onto the canvas and editing as you please.
For example here is how you search for the “Title” block.
Head to the top left-hand corner and hit the magnifying glass to search.
Now type “Title” and you’ll be presented with an array of options to add a title to your email.
Follow the same process to add other elements to your email template such as:
- Subtitles
- Buttons
- Text Box’s
- Links
- Images
- Videos
- iFrames
- Highlight Article’s
- Products
- Much much more…
Plain Text
Plain text emails have gotten VERY popular over the past 5 years.
You may think whats the reasoning? why don’t you just send HTML surely its better for your brand if the email looks pretty?
I’d answer that by saying the following: meh, I literally mean it, I’ve tested both across hundreds of different industries over my career as an SEO consultant and while I’ve been in that job I’ve also taken care of a lot of companies email campaigns and truthfully it depends on whether the industry you’re working in is a visual industry or not i.e. photography, fashion.
If your business is more about messaging and teaching, then plain text emails tend to work a lot better in terms of achieving a great open rate and click-through-rate.
One key thing to mention is that email providers like Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo have filters that often send emails with images into spam folders: not all of the time, but it can happen often, it just depends on the context of your email.
As a result of this often businesses who have a lot to say in their emails in a text form, more often then not opt to send plain text emails which will often have a higher rate of delivery.
In Mailerlite to open the plain text editor. create a new campaign and select one of the two options below:
As you can see from the image below the plain text editor is as easy using Microsoft Word, saying that if you’re proficient with any word processor then using it shouldn’t need any further explanation.
Integrations
Mailerlite can integrate easily with third-party systems such as Woocommerce, Shopify, Instagram, Facebook and much more allowing you to easily import leads and customers onto your email list.
Pricing
Mailerlite not only has a whole bunch of features that can help musicians grow their email lists but it’s pricing is also well worth raving about as it is both affordable while your starting out with ZERO subscribers but also remains one of the more affordable options when you have a list with 1000+ subscribers and beyond.
The reason i say it’s affordable when your first starting out is because if you don’t have any subscribers yet, you don’t have to pay anything!
Once you have surpassed 1000 subscribers you’ll only have to pay $10 per month, this is one of the biggest reasons why i love Mailerlite, it doesn’t scrimp on features and functionality and it’s pricing is 10 times more affordable then most of it’s competitors.
So if you’ve got a new project to promote and you need an affordable email marketing platform to help you out with your campaign.
Mailerlite is the one that i recommend.
